Tips to keep in mind while knitting or crocheting for Chemo Patients
1) Have fun. This activity should not add stress to your life. It should relax you! It's a $3 skein of yarn! - no worries! Use bright, fun and cheery colors and patterns.
2) Use soft yarn - the scalp is a sensitive area
3) Wool will not work - but if you are desperate to use wool up - knit away and donate to your local food pantry - they can use them!
4) Be aware some patients will be too self-conscious to wear lacy patterns - hats where the scalp will show though the holes.
5) Both summer and winter weight hats are needed.
6) If you hate the "too tight" first row - try casting on stitches on a size larger needles, and transfer the stitches before you start knitting to the correct size needles. Or, cast on using BOTH needles at the same time and slide one out once you are done.
7) If you hate sewing up a seam when you finish knitting, try knitting in the round. You'll use a single double point circular needle. Google it for tips. recommend: Using the “Travelling Loop” method(http://sites.google.com/site/purplesagedesigns/techniques-1/single-loop-not-magic-loop-knitting-in-the-round),
